Florence D’Angelo was born in the Philippines in 1982. She is a self-taught visual artist living and working in Peekskill, New York. Although artistic most of her life she began publicly showing work in 2019 throughout her local communities and sharing on social media. D'Angelo is a member of Beacon Arts and featured in the artist directories of Visionary Art Collective and All She Makes. Her paintings belong to private collections throughout the United States and Canada.
My work is rooted in the visual language of myth and transformation, using abstracted landscapes and cosmic elements to reflect the universal arc of the hero’s journey. Each painting serves as a map of that inner odyssey - a passage through unknown realms, trials, revelations, and returns.
Each piece is a layered narrative - mountains float, suns multiply, and shapes disassemble and reassemble in surreal harmony. These forms echo the emotional stages of a quest: the call to adventure, crossing thresholds, and the eventual emerging into light. The recurring use of cosmic and geological imagery also reflects my interest in time, transformation, and the hidden systems that shape our inner and outer worlds.
As a Filippino immigrant and recent naturalized US citizen, I am especially drawn to the tension between rootedness and suspension. The floating mountains and geometric frameworks evoke both grounding and elevation, stability and impermanence. They invite the viewer into a world where the familiar becomes strange and where the journey inward reflects an imagined universe.
Ultimately, my paintings are visual portals into the archetypal story we all carry. We all have a journey and a mountain to climb. Through abstraction and vibrant color, I seek to awaken a sense of wonder, courage, and the reminder that the journey, with all its mystery, is worth it.
